The Light Gallery is excited to host the photographic exhibition , Unfinished Allegories, by Adelaide Hills-based, contemporary photographer Ervin Janek. The opening night will be held at The Light Gallery at The Centre for Creative Photography in Marleston on Friday

The Light Gallery is excited to host the photographic exhibition , Unfinished Allegories, by Adelaide Hills-based, contemporary photographer Ervin Janek.

The opening night will be held at The Light Gallery at The Centre for Creative Photography in Marleston on Friday 11th May 2012 at 7pm until 9pm, and will conclude on the 15th June 2012. And as a Mothers Day Special, an Artist talk and Q&A will be held at The Light Gallery on the 13th May at 1pm.

Ervin Janek was born in Budapest. At the age of sixteen was jailed by the Soviets for involvement in dissident literature. The following year, during the 1956 Hungarian uprising, the jails were opened, freeing him to fight in the uprising. When it failed he fled Hungary on his own, becoming a refugee in Austria and finally Australia. He worked in many jobs, mainly manual labour, until starting his own business making toys. He bought his first camera to make photographic jigsaw puzzles but became more interested in making art.
He works with photography, block-printing and sculpture. He has held thirteen solo or major shows and been in many group shows. A very ‘hands-on’ artist, Janek is interested in pushing the limits of analogue processes. He does not manipulate his photographs digitally but uses projections and physical materials to create often surreal images. He has said he doesn’t ‘take’ photographs; he ‘makes’ photographs.
Unfinished Allegories is an exhibition of photographs and related works. It deals with stories pertaining to the artist and the larger pool of life. Naturally these stories are unfinished, as all stories are, even after the protagonist’s death when they are taken over by others. Stories have a way of mutating according to each viewpoint, thus becoming part of a larger human story, thus allegorical.

Janek is interested in the viewer bringing their own readings to his artworks, bringing a ‘finish’ to the images at least for a time. The images are part history, part future, part personal, part universal. They express such things as: love for, yet disassociation from nature and humankind, connection/interconnection with ‘All’, and the personal quest for wholeness. They have a moral and political edge without being didactic.

The Light Gallery, Adelaide’s sole dedicated photography exhibition space, is located at The Centre for Creative Photography. The CCP was founded in 1997 by Gavin Blake and it has become South Australia’s largest and only private, accredited photographic school. The CCP is dedicated to promoting the highest level of photographic art practice.
Unfinished Allegories is definitely a show worth seeing; don’t miss out!

Gallery hours are Tuesday – Friday 9am – 5pm or by appointment and for the duration of ‘Unfinished Allegories’, The Light Gallery will be open from 1-5pm.

Get around it on facebook here here here here or read below

El Happy’s Moteleria and The Adelaide* Magazine present…

===========================

- ” SOMEONE IN NEW MEXICO LOVES ME ” -
_______ ( a dinner of heart & hand ) ________

===========================

What are you on about now, freaks? Why are you always so damn cryptic? Who and what even ARE you?

It’s a one-off dinner, so expect to be fed at least once, probably four or five times though. And it will be damn good grub. Seriously. There will also be a variety of drinks, so have your thirst ready for a delicious quenching.

Hearts and hands? You’ll need to use them throughout the night, so don’t leave them on the coffee table at home. New Mexico? Well, it’s slightly Mexican, and it’s new, and it’s a bit American. It’s a pretty damn good place to be.

Where? You’re not allowed to know yet. We’re in the process of transforming a large space into something that will invite / arouse / frighten / amaze / moisten / tenderise and entertain you.

On the look out for some local music/means of procrastination this friday?

Well here’s a project from Adelaide local Laurence Szucs – Ildiko are a six piece built around singer-songwriter Szucs. This band is currently working on its debut release and the industry is turning its head!

Producer, Shaun Thatcher describes the band ‘s style “Crafting lush folk-pop songs, they layer harmonies over Szuc’s finger-picking guitar style and delicate vocals, reminiscent at times of Arthur Russell or Eric Bachmann. There’s a lot of energy in their set, moving from softer singer-songwriter numbers to bigger, more “full band” pieces, with Szucs swapping acoustic guitar for electric with ease. Halfway through their set band member Julia Busuttil joins the stage, her singing adding another dimension to their harmonies, and providing a foil for Szucs on stage. Illdiko are clearly a talented bunch with an ear for a melody.”

There is no end to the good reports that are coming in for Ildiko. Some pretty high praise from J Walker from Machine Translations :

“Ildiko are one of my favourite bands in the world. The songs are swirls of energy, imagery and musical imagination and Laurence Szucs is one of the most amazing, fluid and lyrical guitar players you’ll ever witness. Go see ‘em!”

J walker, Machine Translations

If you’re intrigued then head on over to the bandpage where you can stream some of their tracks yourself and have a listen to this local music that has got the industry raving!

This week home-grown Adelaide beatsmith Kyson released his latest EP ‘Patience’ all the way from Berlin with Moodgadget Records.

Fourwords has been pumping ‘Patience’ since its release this week and wanted to share it with fans of blissfully sweet, ambient Dub/ eletronic tunes. If you’ve been a fan of the latest fourwords parties with the likes of Oisima or Brokers then why not click on over to Kyson and check out some of the freshest tunes from this local/international artist.

This guy has been making serious waves across Europe and when you hear this EP you will know why. This Ep features 6 remarkable tracks, with peaks and troughs of the most ultimate atmospheric tunes to come out of Adelaide for a long time.

You can grab the EP for yourself here, or on itunes, beatport, whatpeopleplay, etc.

Or head over to his website to stream a whole lot of his own tunes there.

While you are there- check this out. Last month local Adelaide film maker- Mike Williamson put together a clip for Kyson’s track ‘Frustration With Myself’

This Saturday night The Metro plays host to a very special night of music with Traveller and Forture, the extremely talented Menagerie and wait for it…Jordan Ireland, best known for his work with (in my opinion) one of the greatest bands to come out of Australia in the last decade if not ever, The Middle East.

After forming in 2005 the Middle East released their first EP The Recordings of The Middle East in 2008 after which the band went on a short hiatus. In 2009 they reformed and re-released an abridged version of the debut EP which would go on to have two singles, Blood and The Darkest Side included in the 2009 hottest 100.

In 2011 The Middle East released their final Album I Want That You Are Always Happy which included gems like Jesus Came to my Birthday Party and Land of The Bloody Unknown. July 2011 saw an unexpected and depressing announcement from the band that their Splendor in the Grass show would be their last!! Depressing I know, however don’t stress because Saturday night one of the the principle song writers and founding members of this great band will be playing a solo set at the Metro Hotel.

It is sure to be one very special night of music. Local lads Menagerie will bring the good vibes early with Traveller and Fortune and Jordan’s friend Andre also helping out.

Doors open from 8.30 and we advise you to get in early to take the entire night in! No Middle East makes us sad but nights like this make us extremely excited almost too excited. More information can be found here!

I fucking love The Middle East!

SWAMP/WITHERN
LOGAN MACDONALD

SWAMP/WITHERN are the corresponding titles for the London Metropolitan Police’s operations after the Brixton Riots of 1981 (Operation Swamp) and the recent London/Tottenham Riots of 2011 (Operation Withern). In SWAMP/WITHERN, these key moments of the cultural present and historical are merged from the viewpoint of a generation who has only experienced these times through recorded media but both incidents are reflective of a social entropic force that is collapse or suspend time.

Logan Macdonald is an emerging artist/curator from Adelaide; he completed a Bachelor of Visual Arts (Honours) in 2007 at the South Australian School of Art, UniSA. He has exhibited at the Australian Experimental Art Foundation’s odradekaeaf, INFLIGHT (Hobart, Tasmania), Nexus Multicultural Arts Centre and FELTspace; as well as Seventh Gallery and Next Wave Festival in Melbourne. He has curated various other projects including exhibitions such as the Helpmann Graduate Exhibition as well as projects at Nexus, FELTspace and Format Festival and was selected to participate in the Australia Council for the Arts’ Geek in Residence (2010 and 2011)
CHLOE LANGFORD

TOTAL REFRESHMENT is a sculpture made using salt-dough and salmon coloured insulation. The work has been built specifically for the site after a summer spent in a makeshift backyard studio with these materials.

“The uncertainty of these objects mirrors the uncertainty with which we view them – the eerily ever-present, yet rarely acknowledged split between the primary experience and the self-conscious “viewing” experience.” —- from the 2012 Heavy Jelly exhibition text by Stan Mahoney.

Chloe Langford is an artist based in Adelaide, Australia. She co-founded the permanent Format Collective space in Adelaide and co-directed the 2010 & 2011 Format Festivals. In the past she has exhibited in group exhibitions at Format, Magazine Gallery, FELTspace, and the Jam Factory. In 2012 she joined the founding committee of the Fontanelle gallery and studio complex and exhibited with Firstdraft Gallery, Sydney. In June she will be attending a six week residency at Kunst Stoffe, Berlin. Chloe graduated with First Class Honours from the South Australian School of Art.
